Empathy Machine

“So much of the arts today focus on anxiety division, and anger as a primary lens to tell stories. When art, especially film, is done well; I believe it becomes a generative spiritual tool. It can become an empathy machine,” says Theo, on a walk in Erindale Park, Mississauga.

Good [Art] creates a bridge for people from all different worldviews to experience the same story, even just for a moment. It gives people an even meeting ground. [That is] the soft power of art in culture.

Theo Vandergraaf is a Toronto based film director, actor, and fine artist. We first met two years ago during an online seminar. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know him both as a fellow artist and as a brother in Christ. His heart for the people around him has consistently encouraged and inspired me through his words, action, and prayers.

A few weeks ago, I asked him what he loved the most about directing and acting. And I instantly fell in love with his perspective. I wish you could have all been there to hear these words being uttered in the brisk morning air.

“Imagine yourself going to the movies. You grab your popcorn and drinks, chat with your friends, walk to your seat, and the lights go down. You're sitting there with two hundred people you’ve never met before, but you're all about to experience the same story. Suddenly there’s this one scene that hits you deeply. Odds are the strangers around you are feeling a similar emotion. To me, that shared humanity is not only beautiful, but vital. It awakens possibility in the audiences hearts to experience humanity beyond the confines of their own experience. [art] is an empathy machine. It takes you out of self concerns and expands your awareness to others around you… it creates a bridge for people from all different experiences to access a "common meeting ground"… [That is] the soft power of art/storytelling in culture. It's the most effective way to share an idea, that's why Jesus spoke in parables!

Theo’s thoughtful approach to art is evident in all of his creative endeavours. On stage, film, paper, or canvas, Theo’s work inspires and challenges his viewers to contend rather than consume.
